Biography

Experience Porter was born at Hadley Massachusetts on Aug. 5, 1676, son of Samuel and Anna (or Hannah) Stanley Porter. [1][2]

  • 1699: April 5: Experience Porter was granted a lot on the Pine Plain at Hadley, 80 by 16 rods. [3]
  • 1701: In the first division of lands south of Mount Holyoke, Experience drew a lot of additional land 32 by 3 rods. [3]
  • 1709: 12: 14: 7: 19: 21: 23: Served as Townsman/Selectman. [3]
  • 1720: January: Experience taxed for the south Mount Holyoke division at L117 18 s. [3]
  • 1721: Experience was one of the men appointed as Trustee for the lending of money of the town of Hadley at 5 percent (ie. mortgages from the town to proprietors.) [3]
  • 1722: Experience, his father Samuel and Lt. John Smith were responsible for laying out the 21 highways for the proprietors. [3]

Experience married Abigail Williams at Hadley on May 2, 1698. [1] [2] Abigail was born on July 12, 1674, daughter of Samuel Williams of Roxbury. [3]

They removed to Mansfield, Connecticut. about 1725, where he died on Aug. 28, 1750, aged 75. [3] [4] ?He is buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery, Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. [5]

Abigial died on April 20, 1765, aged 91. [4][3] She is buried in the Olde Mansfield Center Cemetery, Mansfield, Connecticut. [6]

  3. Experience born on Dec. 15, 1702 [1]; married on Nov. 29, 1725, Abigail Safford; died Oct. 28, 1744. [3][4]
  4. John born on Dec. 27, 1704 [1]; married Abigail Arnold on Jan. 13, 1732. [3] [4]
  5. Abigail born on March 19, 1707[1]; married Nehemiah Estabrook on Oct. 18. 1742 as his second wife; died on July 31, 1770. [3] [4]
  6. Nathaniel born on Aug. 26, 1709 [1]; married Elizabeth Storrs on Sept. 10, 1730 [4] and removed to Lebanon, NH. He died in Hatfield on Nov. 4, 1779. [3]
  7. Martha born Jan. 11, 1711/12; died Feb. 18, 1711/22. [1] [3]
  8. Eunice born on Dec. 30, 1712 [1]; married Huckins Storrs on Nov. 12, 1731. [3] [4]
  9. Mehitable born on July 30, 1715 [1]; married Thomas Barrows April 30, 1741; died on March 25, 1742. [3] [4]
