Biography

Charles K. Porter died so young very little is known about him. He is a descendant of the Porters who came to this country with the Massachusetts Bay Company. The parents of Charles K. Porter are unknown. We do know he was connected to the Jarvis family who came with the Massachusettes Bay Company on the same ship, also the Chauncey family.

It was the custom to name children after grandparents, parents, brothers & sisters. His name was Chauncey Charles....Could the Chauncey possibly had been the maiden name of Charles K.'s mother? Edward & Thomas are prominent names in the family. His great great grandson, Dalton Jarvis Cantey Porter received family names: DALTON for an Uncle on the Cantey side of the family whose last name was Dalton: He told us the JARVIS was for an Uncle in Massachusetts he was not sure if possibly the mother was a Jarvis, or a sister of Charles K. married a Jarvis: CANTEY was his Grandmother's maiden name, Ellen G. Cantey, who married Chauncey Charles Porter.

Charles K. Porter was born 15 Jun 1898 in Boston Massachusetts. As a young man he went to New Orleans, where he was listed as a merchant in the 1920 census 180 N.O. TWPL with 182 N.O TWPL belonging to David Porter. Shop of a sort near the Water front. We do not know what connection David Porter is. He died 9/14/1824 and is buried in Covington, Louisiana.

Charles K. married Mary Lawn, daughter of Buxton Lawn & Mary Dawson born 1801 England. Married 1 Jun 1819.. They had 3 children. the oldest Chauncey Charles married Ellen G. Cantey....This family is the only one with surviving descendants....Charles K. died 14 September 1824 in Claiborn, St. Tammany, Louisiana & is buried in the old Carrollton Louisian Cemetery. His daughter in law Ellen G. Cantey (Canty) is also buried there. His mother Mary Lawn, & his sister Mary Hampson and son Chauncey Charles Porter are among those relatives interned in the Preston-Hampson-Porter tomb in Carrollton, Louisiana.

Charles K. Porter is a descendant of John Porter b. 1560 England, whose sons Richard, John & Thomas were passengers on the Massachusetts Bay Fleet, in 1630. I am still working on the exact one. The information was handed down from Chauncey Charles Porter to Edward Lawn Porter to Dalton Jarvis Cantey Porter Sr. We know very little about Charles K. Porter who died at age 26 except what is in the affidavit of Mary Lawn Porter
