Born in New Orleans to Charles K. Porter, descended from the original Massachusetts Bay Company & Mary Lawn. Though his father died when he was about 5 & his mother never remarried, the family was affluent . The family owned property in Covington on the north shore of Lake Ponchetrain. He was well educated, had very good penmanship & was very meticulous. A scrapbook started by Chauncey Charles in 1836 which is filled with articles & reports including records of family social events and obituaries. (in 2017 owned by Selma) He owned a plantation near Carrollton, Louisiana which is now outside the levee. When Carrolton was formed, his brother-in-law John Hampson was elected mayor & Chauncey was appointed Secretary Pro Tem, and in 1851 elected Principal Assessor. The Porter family had a nice residence on Levee Street in Carrollton & one in Covington across from Lake Ponchetrain.

A part of the family wealth was lost after the war between the states. A new levee was built & the family plantation was outside the levee, in 1891 a new levee was erected & the house in Carrollton was also outside the levee. But the real loss of wealth seems to have come with the death of Chauncey Charles in 1872, and with the death of his mother Mary Lawn Porter in 1890 the main source of income ceased. Letters from the family indicate not only a lack of income, after their deaths, but they moved to Covington and became rather reclusive and cut themselves off not only from the rest of the Lawn family they had always been very close to, but also the Cantey's (his wife's family). Chauncey Charles Porter is buried in the PRESTON, HAMPSON, PORTER tomb in Carrolton Louisiana cemetery. Ellen G. Cantey Porter is buried across Lake Ponchetrain at Covington Cemetery in the tomb of Charles K. Porter her father-in-law.
