Note N1225Great - grandmother to Garry. The 1881 census shows her aged 19 living with her husband Thomas Brooks at 16 Winningtons Court, Witten Street, Witton Cum Twambrooks. Thomas and Mary appear to have parted early in their marriage, Thomas going to live with Alice Amelia Horrigan (née Robinson). It would appear that - around the same time - Mary went to live with Edward HABBERLEY in Wincham, she appears there as his "housekeeper" in the 1891 census. Then we found the family in the 1901 census under the ABBERLEY surname. Children Harry and Edward appear as ABBERLEY, but Mary appears as Polly ABBERLEY. Polly was a "pet name" for Mary. So it does appear that - for public purposes - the family were trying to keep up the appearances of a normal married family.... 1
Aunt Molly (Dad's cousin) in 2005 could still remember Mary as "Brooks", but not as a "Habberley" - although she remembers the name Habberley. As a teenager, Aunt Molly would each Sunday take Mary her lunch from Auntie Lottie's (my Grans) on the bus, wrapped in paper and towels to Fowles Court, where she told her to put it in the oven (which was a range). This was because her father George Johnson (then still alive), would not have Mary in the house at 16 George Street. George was known to be very opinionated and moralistic, so even though they were married he thought them bad for having lived together and had children out of wedlock..... 1 Molly described Mary as not very tall, pretty, bonny, but very welcoming. The place as Auntie Molly describes it was, one up and one down, not too clean and when she arrived all the neighbours came out from the Court to see who she was and greet her. Aunt Molly later remembered visiting Mary, with her Auntie Lottie (my Gran), in the workhouse. This is later on after Fowles Court. 1
