John was born on 5 November 1827 in McMinn County, Tennessee, USA. He was the son of Henry Porter and Sarah (Scarborough) Porter. When John was 24 he married Caroline Jane Self on 27 August 1852 in Cherokee County, Texas, USA. John died at the age of 73 on 12 November 1900 in Hillsboro, Hill, Texas, USA
