S1. Find A Grave. Alexander Porter. Revolutionary War Soldier.
Revolutionary Soldier, Enlisted July 11, 1775, Discharged May 26,1780
Ashes of Four Members of Porter Family Recovered from Old Graves A.A. Porter has just returned from a 2500 mile auto trip into southern New York. He left Portage on Tuesday, July 22 and eight days were consumed in the journey.
The purpose of the long drive was to recover the remains of his great grandfather and great grandmother and other relatives buried in abandoned cemeteries in the Empire state, whose far away graves had long been neglected. The ashes of four bodies along with the inscribed headstones marking their last resting place, were brought back to Wisconsin and the remains will be given burial in the Pacific cemetery where repose many members of the Porter family.
The great grandfather, Alexander Porter, was a soldier of the revolution having fought all through the long war of revolt against English domination. He died and was buried more than ninety-two years ago. Besides the remains of Alexander Porter and his wife, those of the mother of the late D.D. Porter, Mrs. Artemesia Porter, first wife of John L. Porter, father of A.A. Porter, and those of a sister of John L. Porter, Miss Lovina Porter, were also brought back. Mrs. Artemesia Porter died in early life about a year after her marriage and Miss Lovina Porter was a girl of eighteen when she passed away.
Alexander Porter was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Town of Freedom, N.Y.
