James Porter was born on March 13 1852 at Hentland, Herefordshire, England.[1] and baptised there on April 4, 1852.[2] He was the youngest son of John Porter and Mary Turner. He had two older brothers, Charles was 4 and John was 2 when he was born. From 1868 until 1871 James was a pupil teacher at Hentland.
In 1871 he went to Battersea Training College in London and qualified as a teacher. His Teacher's Certificate was dated 1873, While he was there he got to know the composer Arthur Sullivan. He was a good organist himself and played at various churches. In one of his diaries he wrote 'St. John's Battersea 1872'.
On January 3, 1873 he went to teach at West Anstey school in Devonshire.
While he was in West Anstey he met Susan Cockram and they became engaged, their forthcoming marriage was announced in the Western Mail[3] Although they published the announcement in the Exeter paper and were married on the date announced, June 23 1877, they were married at St. Paul's Church in Bristol.[4]
By this time James had been appointed to Gladestry school and it was there that they made their home before the beginning of the new school year.
The log book of the public Elementery school at at Gladestry, Radnorshire, states: 'James Porter was elected to the mastership of this new school at Gladestry on Feb 7 1877 and commenced work on Monday Feb 19th 1877.' His weekly reports on events in the school are recorded.[5] He was there for three years and two months, until May 6, 1880. From there he was appointed headmaster of Mansell Lacy school in Herefordshire.

He lived in the school house and ran the school with the help of his wife, an 'Article 68' teacher. Their daughter Amy Florence was born in 1885.
They moved to Pencombe school in 1898[6]
When they left Mansell Lacy, James was presented with an 'Appreciation Certificate' which thanked him for 'his interest in church music, village concerts and meetings in cricket and in everything that contributed to the profit or pleasure of his neighbours'.
It was in Pencombe that James and Susan's only son, James Douglas was born on August 3 1901 just before the family moved to Bodham school in Norfolk, where James took up his final appointment as headmaster when the new school year began.
James and his family were regular worshippers at Bodham Church and he often played the organ there and in other local churches.

James liked going to concerts and theatre. He also enjoyed a game of bowls. He had a wireless in the very early days and commented on the clarity or otherwise of transmission in his diaries.
In March 1917 James retired from teaching and went to live at 16 Onley Street, Norwich with his wife and son, near to his daughter, who was already married and living in Lincoln Street, Norwich. On November 20 1919 the family moved to 4 Bury Street Norwich.
He is listed in Norwich in the 1921 Census.[7]
James' wife, Susan died in 1925 and he died at home on October 21 1933.[8] His daughter was present at his death which was caused by pneumonia, pleurisy and myocardial degeneration. He was buried in Eaton Cemetery, Norwich.
Probate was granted to his son-in-law, William Larner and was registered on November 15 1933[9] Residences
James and his family lived in School Houses at:
Mansell Lacy Herefordshire 1880-1898
Pencombe Worcestershire 1898-1901
Bodham Norfolk 1901-1917
After James retirement in 1917 they moved to a rented terraced house in Onley Street, Norwich, Norfolk. Their final move was to nearby Bury Street, Norwich.
