Biography

GILMER - Graveside services for Erwin C. Porter, of East Mountain, will be held Friday March 6, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Gilmer City Cemetery (Greenwood) with the Rev. Aubrey Pate officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home of Gilmer.

Porter entered into rest March 4, 2009, at a local hospital. He was born November 16, 1910, to David A. Porter Sr. and Della Harris. Their place of rest is in the East Mountain Cemetery. Porter was a member of the East Mountain Baptist Church that his parents help establish. Porter's family was among the oldest settlers in East Mountain and Erwin was the oldest historian at the time of his passing. At his ninetieth celebration there were government officials, family and friends there in his honor. He was Grand Marshal for the holiday parade and a key to the city was presented to him.

Porter was a resident of Upshur County. He was self-employed, retired from oil business and ranching. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the engineers combat battalion division and a member of the American Legion Post #351. He was an avid bird sportsman and an athlete. In his younger day he played base ball pitching for East Texas Oil companies. A White Sox scout found him and his bullet arm with a contract to sign, but his love for family kept him home.

With his notable personality and his kind soul he was truly a good neighbor. Porter's generosity of good deeds touched the lives of his friends.

In lieu of flowers, should you desire, give to the ones you know that are in need.

He was preceded in death by parents, David A. Porter, Sr and Della Harris Porter of East Mountain, Texas; nephew, Ross Porter; wife, Lois Spann Porter; and infant son deceased in 1942 Kenneth Erwin Porter; two sisters: Lucy Clement Smith and Urea Davidson; three brothers, Homer Lee Sr, David A. and Melvin "Big Man" Porter.
