Rationale For Listing Husband As Ransom Dudley

I first found this Ransom on a late 1700’s Rowan County, NC plat map showing he had 250 acres of land purchased in 1784. In 1797 Lawrence Porter, brother to Elizabeth Porter Payne, my ggg grandmother, bought land in Rowan with Ransom Dudley as a witness. In 1800 John Payne, husband to Elizabeth, also bought land in Rowan with Ransom Dudley as witness. In 1801 Ransom Dudley provided security on a 300 pound bond for John Payne to administer his brother’s estate. With this amount of money I believe Ransom was more than just a friend of John Payne or Lawrence Porter. There was probably some type of family relationship.

Ransom’s wife is said to be Rhoda Porter. She is last listed in the 1850 Hamilton, Sullivan, Indiana census living with son-in-law, Gideon Curtis, and daughter, Elizabeth. Her given age is 72 (born about 1778) and birth state is Maryland. I believe she was the daughter of Lawrence Porter, wife, unknown, his father, possibly Robert Porter, Sr. He is reported to have been in the Rev. War Caroline County, MD militia in 1777 which places him in Maryland at the time of her birth. Of the two Porter’s that came from Maryland to Rowan, NC, Lawrence and Collison, two brothers, Collison was younger--not in 1778 census or militia rolls so under 16 in year of Rhoda’s birth—which leads to Lawrence as her father. The 1800 Rowan, NC census shows Lawrence’s children as born 1776 to 1786 with his age as being over 45. Collison’s children are under 10 with his age as born between 1756 and 1776.

Lawrence Porter had previously lived in Rockingham County, NC where a Christopher Dudley (had young children, possible brother to Ransom) lived. I think Lawrence’s 1797 move to Rowan County was to be near his daughter, Rhoda, recently married to Ransom. As a final connection to this Porter family, along with a number of other Rowan residents, including Collison Porter but not Lawrence who had died in 1817, Ransom moved about 1820 to Indiana. He is last listed in the 1830 Washington, IN census as a 60 to 69 year old which would place his birth between 1761 and 1770. On the census about four names below him is listed Collison Porter also age 60 to 69. I think this helps tie this Ransom Dudley to Rowan, NC and to the Porter family.
