As a young man he was in great demand by churches and mission halls as a preacher. He left school at 14 and was apprenticed to a baker, qualifying and working in that trade until 1938, when he was invited to be Superintendent of the Gospel Union in Kirkcaldy. In August of the same year he was married to Jessie McPherson, whom he had met at Eaglesham Street, Bethel, Glasgow, where they both worshipped. In 1944, he was called to Dunrossness Baptist Church in the Shetland Isles but returned in less than a year to work for a while with the Glasgow Foundry Boys Association in Glasgow. He was ordained at Albion and St Paul's Congregational Church, Aberdeen, on October 30, 1952. Previously he had served as pastor at Cruden Bay Congregational Church from 1947 and remained there until 1953. He was inducted as minister of Shotts Congregational Church in 1953, where he served until his retirement on June 25, 1989, at the age of 85. The congregation grew considerably under his leadership and he became something of a legend in Shotts in his own lifetime. Tom Gilmour, former president of Shotts Congregational Church said: Ministers have a central role in the community. A minister leads by example with courage and conviction, the clerical collar being a statement of faith and a badge of recognition. The Reverend George Porter lived this to the full in the Shotts community and beyond. Mr Porter was the minister from boyhood of Shotts man John Arthur who is currently General Secretary of the Scottish Congregational Church. Mr Arthur says of him: Through good times and bad he gave unswerving loyalty to our denomination; but, more importantly, throughout his life and ministry he was steadfastly true to the gospel which he boldly and faithfully proclaimed. It was, above all, his loyalty to the gospel that inspired him to uphold the honour and dignity of the office which he held, not only in the church but also in the whole community which he served in Christ's name. He was always ready and exceptionally able to supply an apt humorous anecdote or comment, which was a useful weapon for a man who was barely four foot eleven! Referring to the longevity of his ministry in Shotts he said: I am the longest and shortest minister in the history of Shotts Congregational Church. He was a faithful weekly visitor to Law Hospital to which he had to travel from Shotts by public transport. Being so well known however, he was often given a lift both there and back in a variety of vehicles. Another legendary quip of his was: I think I must be the only person ever to go into Law Hospital in a hearse and come out in an ambulance. He was buried in Stane cemetery, Shotts, beside his wife.
