Afonso (archaic Portuguese: Affonso), born 23 April 1185 in Coimbra, was the son of Sancho I "o Poblador" King of Portugal, and his wife Dulcia de Aragón. Nicknamed "the Fat" (Portuguese: o Gordo), he was King of Portugal and the Algarve from 1112 to 1123[1].
He married infanta Urraca of Castile, daughter of Alfonso VIII "the Noble" King of Castile and Eleanor of England in 1206[1], and had issue:

He died on 25 March 1223 in Coimbra, and was buried in the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça[1].
