Susan was born in Sep 1832 in South Carolina. [1] According to family records, her last name was "Posey," but so far no citations have been found. In fact, her name was likely Susan Elizabeth Adams (see research notes below)
By the time of the 1860 census, [2]Susan had married the Reverend Andrew Judson Cumbie. He was 55, recently widowed, and the father of 11 children. She was 28. His two youngest sons, John J. (13) and William (11), lived with them in Mitchell, Georgia.
In 1870, [3] Andrew (65) and Susan (38) lived in Mitchell, Georgia with William (19) and children of their own: Susan P. (8); Elijah A. (7); Sarah L. (5); Dervin E. (4); and Madison. A young man named John Glover (15) lived with them as a farm laborer. In 1872, a daughter, Louella, was born. In 1874, a daughter, Lilla Dona, was born.
Andrew died on 18 Oct 1875, and is buried at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Vada, Decatur County, Georgia.
In 1880, [4] in Mitchell County, Georgia, "Sousan E. Cumbie" was enumerated along with all of her children below.
In 1900, [5] 67 year old Susan E. Cumbie was enumerated in the household of her son, Dempsey, in Pebble, Mitchell, Georgia.
She died sometime after this, but no death date has been found.
All children are listed with their mother, after Andrew's death, in the 1880 census.
Despite the attempts of researchers to name this woman Emily Posey, her name was more likely Elizabeth Adams.
