Biography

Unknown Origin, including name

This profile represents the wife of Henry Knowles of Portsmouth and Warwick, Rhode Island.[1]

Birth date about 1625 is an estimate, based on the estimated birth date of her eldest child. England as place of birth is a guess.

Savage reported that Henry "had, I suppose, married a daughter of Robert Porter of Warwick."[2] The basis for this supposition is unknown. No primary record includes the name of Henry's wife, not even her first name. Bolton, Moriarty, and Austin all report Henry's wife's name is unknown.[3][4][5] She was mentioned in Henry's will (unnamed).[5]

Robert Potter was featured by Anderson in his Great Migration series, and none of his daughters could have married Henry Knowles. According to Anderson, Robert potter had only two daughters, Deliverance and Elizabeth. Deliverance Potter married to James Greene, and Elizabeth "is said to have married" to Richard Harcutt [Austin 156].[6] Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island also includes a daughter, Isabel, but Anderson disputes her based on the will of Robert Potter's second wife, Sarah which did not mention Isabel.[5] Isabel married 1) Unknown Moss, and 2) William Burton.[6]

Marriage

She married before about 1645 to Henry Knowles.[3]

Children

Children of Henry Knowles and his wife:[3]

Death and Legacy

She was living when Henry made his will on 2 January 1670/1,[5] and it was proved at Warwick, on 20 January 1670/1.[3] Henry was apparently living at Kings Town when he made his will.[5]

Place of death and date of death are unknown. She is assumed to have died after January 1671 in Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations.

Potter-1466 and Unknown-396504 appear to represent the same person because: Have the managers decided which is better?

1) disconnecting the marriage to Henry Knowles. He was only married once, and her name is completely unknown. (Please see Henry Knowles profile) 2) Merging this profile into Unknown-396504

I have proposed the merge, thinking it is easier (see Anne's msg below), but you can always reject and disconnect from Henry Knowles (children will need to be moved). Thanks!

Williams-10789 and Unknown-396504 do not represent the same person because: Making my own merge proposal into a rejected match. Have found that Elizabeth "Molly" Williams married the Henry Knowles born 20 Nov 1708. Instead will disconnect marriage and propose merge with Molly Williams.

There is no evidence to indicate that Susanna dtr of Robert Potter of Newport Pagnell was the wife of Henry Knowles. Henry's wife is Unknown.

This can be handled one of two ways. 1) Disconnect from father Robert. Merge her into Unknown Unknown. This is probably the easiest option. And will keep you on the trusted list of the mother of the Knowles children 2) Disconnect from Henry and Henry's children and leave her as Susann d/o Robert of Newport Pagnell.

Preference? Objections?

Potter-1468 and Unknown-396504 do not represent the same person because: Ann is d/o Robert Potter of Newport Pagnell, but not wife of Henry Knowles. She needs to be disconnected not merged.

How do we know this Susanna is the same Susanna d. 1715 in Warwick.

Unmerged match with Unknown-396504

There are so many siblings attached to this profile that I have chosen to temporarily make it an unmerged match instead of a straightforward merge. This is because there is some question (per messages) who is supposed to be her father. The Knowles connection might be a clue we need in order to figure it out. Let's work on this together? Thanks!

Unmerged match with Potter-1466.

Please see that profile for details. Thanks!

Williams-10789 and Unknown-396504 appear to represent the same person because: The wife of Henry Knowles' name is unknown. She was not a daughter of Robert Potter. (see bio for info and sources)

Please approve if you agree. Thanks!
