Biography
Mary Patten Potter was born in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, in 1814, the eldest child born to Nahum and Elizabeth (Mead) Potter. (Based on her age at the time of her death - 75 years, 4 months and 23 days - she was born about March 24, 1814.)
She married Rev. Benjamin F. Spilman in 1840 in Illinois, as his second wife.[1] They had 2 children:
- Benjamin Franklin, born 8 January 1846, Edwardsville, IL; d. 1918
- Elizabeth Emma, born 25 September 1849, Chester, IL; d. 1914
The couple lived in Illinois for many years. Her husband was a missionary who organized the church at Shawneetown, Illinois in 1826. He died in 1859, and at the time of the 1860 census, Mary and her 2 children were living in Shawneetown, where Mary was working as a "teacheress".[2]
By 1870, she had returned to Massachusetts, where she lived with her daughter Elizabeth Newell and her family in Boston.[3]
Mary died in 1889, when she was 75 years old.[4] She is buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.[5]
