Ancestors of Interest
It is handed down within our Runciman family that Margaret Potter was a descendant of the Scottish covenanter John Potter hanged for his beliefs at the / Mercat Cross, Edinburgh on 1 December 1680. A brief family tree is drawn by my great aunt Mary Thomson Runciman, 1890-1961, on the inside back cover of our family copy of 'A Cloud of Witnesses', a biography of all the Scottish covenanters. Unfortunately the precise trail from John down to Margaret was not known. It is published that John, who was from Uphall, Midlothian, left a widow and child but we have no more information. Margaret will probably be his granddaughter or gt-granddaughter.
