In his twenties, Edward was a wine merchant, in partnership with Charles Hay Steele in Birkenhead. They dissolved their partnership on June 30, 1849.[1]
He subsequently worked as a cotton broker in partnership with John Samuel Wood until they dissolved the partnership in 1858.[2] This must have been an amicable parting of the ways, as Edward would marry John's daughter Annie in 1864.
