James was a surgeon his practice was at King Street Knutsford. He was also prison surgeon for the Knutsford House of Correction.[1]

↑ After his death in September 1827, the magistrates of Chester County advertised for his replacement:
"NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, THAT the Magistrates of the County of Chester will proceed at their next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, to be held at Nether Knutsford, the FIFTEENTH DAY of OCTOBER next, to appoint a SURGEON (in the room of Mr. James Potter, deceased) to attend the Prisoners in the House Correction there, and provide the necessary Medicines. The salary is £100 per annum. Applicants are requested to send their names to the Office of the Clerk of the Peace, at Chester, on or before the 10th of October next.
