Second of seven children born to William Potter, Jr and Elizabeth Mosher.

Married Lois Clarke, daughter of Thomas Clarke and Bridget Barber, on Dec 1, 1765, in Richmond, RI. They were the parents of Robert (d. 1806, m. Lydia Crandall) and Daniel (m. Mary "Polly" Greene).

He and his family emigrated west to Berlin, NY along with many other of their relatives.
