Biography

This Biography is taken from Bennett DeWitt and Related Families, pp 282-283 [1].

Two brothers, George Potter and Thomas Potter, both of London, England came to America as British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Family tradition has it that they were both taken prisoner by the American Army and later served in the American Army and became American citizens, but we find nothing about them in the National Archives, Washington, D.C.; however, the records are incomplete and it is possible that such tradition could be fact but we have no way of verifying it.

George Potter was born i n London, England in the year of 1755 and came to America during the Revolutionary War. On June 6, 1782 he married Hannah Fitzugh who was born August 20, 1758. Their marriage was not recorded until June 11, 1782, The marriage record states, "Signed with the consent of Robert Fitugh", signed Wm. Ewing, Bedford County, Virginia. To their marriage were born:

1. John Potter, b. 5-19-1783; d. 2-20-1864; m. 7-20-1820, Martha (Patsey) Edgar.

2. Elizabeth Potter, b. 3-19-1785.

3. Samuel Potter, b. 8-20-1787; m. Cynthey Wells, Wednesday, March 15, 1809.

4. Frances Potter, b. 12-5-1789

5. Mary Potter, b. 5-7-1793

6. Hannah Potter, (deceased), b. 6-1796; d. 1797

7. William Potter, b. 9-27-1798; d. 1845: m. Nancy Dillard , Thursday, March 18, 1819.

8. Hannah Potter, b. 5-30-1801 in Kentucky; d. 6-20-1837 in Cooper County, Mo; m. lst. 4-24-1819, Isaac Newton Ewing; m. 2nd. 7-20-1820, Larkin DeWitt, (Marriage Records of Cooper County, Mo., A-5).

George Potter died in Cooper County, 1-17-I826, and is buried in an old cemetery at Boonville, Missouri. Hannah (Fitzugh) Potter died 2-16-1831 and is also buried in Cooper County, Missouri.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

Potter-3932 and Potter-3096 appear to represent the same person because: I reviewed your proposed merge of these two items and they are correct. They need to be merged. I am re-proposing the merge. Jason J. Ross

Potter-3932 and Potter-3096 are not ready to be merged because: Not enough info to merge.
Potter-3932 and Potter-3096 appear to represent the same person because: One profile has source stating Potter was born in England. The other profile has no source. Wife Hannah also in a proposed merge.
Potter-5750 and Potter-3932 appear to represent the same person because: Mistakenly created a new profile for George Bher Potter (Potter-5750) when all I wanted to do was add the exiting profile (Potter-3932) to my family tree.

I am new to wikiTree and have not quite figured out how it works. I am experienced in genealogy. I am a direct descendant of George Bher Potter andHannah Fitzhugh confirmed on Ancestry thru my DNA test, I am having my brother tested thru Family Tree DNA as we speak and he carries the y DNA from George Behr Potter.

I just had my mtDNA done but that doesnt help thePotter side. Vickie Lynne Potter [email address removed]
