Biography

Mary was born about 1666. Mary Potter was the daughter of Nathaniel Potter and Elizabeth Stokes.[1]

Mary married Samuel Wilbore they lived on what was recently the Oliver H. Wilbor place, on the west road and in the southwestern part of the town. Part of this land he received from his father. His wife, Mary Potter, came from what is now Central Village; her father's farm is a little west of Central Village up a lane to the south of the Main Road from Central Village to Adamsville. On this land is a large Brownell cemetery. Samuel Wilbore settled in Little Compton much earlier than 1700. It was he who laid out the old Wilbor cemetery in 1740 on his farm and it has been used for many generations by his descendants. (West Road is in Little Compton, Rhode Island; Central Village is located within Westport, Bristol County, Massachusetts; Adamsville is a village located within Little Compton, Rhode Island)[2]

Mary passed away before 1729.[3]

Burial

1740 Seaconnet Cemetery, Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island, United States. [4]

Research Notes

1691 - Little Compton as part of the original settlement of Plymouth Colony merges with Massachusetts Bay Colony, et al to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. [Plymouth Colony existed without a formal charter since it’s founding, as the Pilgrim’s were originally chartered for a destination in the Hudson River (New York) area.]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Potter-2759 and Potter-559 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person

This profile has Mary dying and marrying before she was born. Her husband Samuel Wilbore was born about 1664. Samuel and Mary married in 1689. Mary could not have been born in 1690 and could not have died in 1675. My records show that Mary was probably born about 1666. Their first child, Martha, was born about 1690 and their last child, Isaac, in 1712. Samuel's will, made in 1729/30 does not mention his wife. See Little Compton Families by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour.

Potter-1607 and Potter-559 should be corrected and merged.

Potter-1607 and Potter-559 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person. Potter-1607 has an incorrect birth date. Should be about 1675.

See Little Compton Families, vol. 2, pg. 504. Mary was married when her father's will was proved in 1704. A birthdate of 1690 is unlikely. She should be merged with Potter-559 as they are the same person.
