DEATH AT, CHURCH, EX-SUPERINTENDENT POTTER During the morning service yesterday at St. John's (Church of England) at Glebe Point, Mr. Alfred Potter, retired superintendent of police, collapsed suddenly and died beside the altar rails. Mr Potter, who was a regular attendant at St. John's, took a deep interest in the affairs of the church, and had been a sidesman for a long time. He had just fin- ished taking up the offertory and was wait- ing beside the altar when his end came so swiftly. . Mr. Potter was born In Surrey, England, in 1849, and came to New South Wales at an early ago. He Joined the police force in 1S73, and was attached to tho old Central Police Station. In a few years he was pro- moted to the rank of sub-inspector, and trans- ferred to No. 4 (George-street North). From No. 4 he went to Redfern, and in 1890 he was appointed Inspector In charge of the No. 1 city station. About 10 years later he was appointed to one of the most responsible posts in the force-superintendent in charge of the criminal investigation branch. He retired in 1909 at the age of 60 years, and settled at 12 Mansfield-street, Glebe Point. Mr. Potter read extensively, and was es- pecially interested in early Australian history, being associated with the Royal Australian Historical Society. He was married twice, and is survived by Mrs. Potter and one son, Mr. J. J. Potter, who is chief clerk to the Board of Health. The funeral will leave St. John's Church at 2.15 o'clock this afternoon for Rookwood Cemetery.

Article on the death of Alfred, SMH, Tuesday 19 April 1927] MR. ALFRED POTTER. The funeral of Mr. Alfred Potter, ex-super lntendent of police, who died suddenly on Sun- day, took place yesterday at Rookwood Ceme- tery. It was preceded by a choral service at St. John's (Glebe) Church of England, at- tended by relatives, church officers, and many friends. The coffin, draped with a Union Jack and covered with numerous wreaths, was taken by road to the cemetery. The services at the church and graveside were conducted by the Rev. F. W. Tugwell. The chief mourners were Messrs. James J. Potter (son), Alfred Potter (grandson), John and George Potter (brothers), J. Collins and R. Oxley (brothers-in-law), and T. Walker (nephew). Members and ex-members of the metropolitan police force were present. In- cluding the Commissioner of Police (Mr. James Mitchell) and Messrs. Moodie, Fowler, Smith, and Tait. Others present were Messrs. T. H. Neely, A. Kench, F. Madden (Board of Health staff), and L. Broadbent.
