William Swinton b. 1700 Scotland, m. 1730 Hannah White Brown. He was one of the surveyors of the city of Georgetown. Many sources state that William Swinton's father was Sir John Swinton of Berwickshire, Scotland, but this is incorrect. William Swinton, 'the Royal Surveyor', is the son of Alexander Swyne/Swinton and Margaret Moncrieff. Hannah White and her first husband James Brown of Black River SC had children: John Brown, William Brown m. Esther/Hester DuPre, Margaret Brown, Christian Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Alexander Brown m. (1st) Mary Dutarque m. (2nd) Mary Belin, Hannah Brown m. (1st) her first cousin Leonard White m. (2nd) Mr. Murray. If the statement that Hannah Brown married her cousin Leonard White is true, then Hannah Brown would be the daughter of William White and the sister of Col. Anthony White and Col. John White who m. Sarah Severence. Col. Anthony White's son Anthony Martin White m. Sarah Thompson []. Two of Col. John White's sons are: Leonard White m. Hannah Brown (daughter of Hannah White and James Brown), and Capt. Anthony White m. Mary Johnson 'the widow king'. Capt. His decendants were clanish, and when occasion demanded, removed in a body to another locality. About 1825, they left the rice district, on account of its unhealthfulness, and removed to the oak and hickory lands of Chester District, and again in 1836, to Winston County, Mississippi. Prior to the Civil War, this family were quite wealthy, but lost nearly all their property during that conflict. Since then they have scattered to various places, many settling in Texas." In his will, Thomas Potts mentions his wife: Sarah, sons: Thomas and John, daughters: Mary Johnson, Sarah Hughes, Anne, Elizabeth Swinton, and Margaret, grandson: Thomas Johnson, and neighbors: John Story, Joseph Roper, William Brockington. Executors: Wife, William Hughes, sons Thomas and John. Wtinesses: John Walker, Samuel Screven, and George Commander. Tradition has it that Thomas Potts had a brother, John Potts, who came to America with him, and settled either in Pennsylvania or Virginia Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Hillary/Gillary Burton who was born in 1678 in Essex, England; d. 1757 and Mary Keelin; b. 1668, d. 1750. She was the first female child born in South Carolina. Thomas Burton/Burtin had at least three children: Thomas Burton Jr., Sarah Burton, and Mary Burton. In his will, Thomas Burtin mentions daughter Sarah Burtin wife of Thomas Potts and grandchildren: Francis Burtin; Thomas Burtin; Mary Burtin; Sarah Burtin and Hannah Burtin. The will was witnessed by Geo. Atkinson, Joshua Screven and Thomas Potts Jr. The Executors were Thomas Potts [1] and John Walker. ============================================
