He lived in the Stockerton Cottage in Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland with his parents and siblings in June 1941. His father was an agricultural laborer.
In March 1851, at 17 years old, he was working as an agricultural laborer on the farm of William Bell.

Mary Potts was born on 5 November 1829. She probably died before June 1841 as she was not on that census with her parents and siblings.
Elizabeth Potts was born on 21 June 1836. She married Patrick Murphy on 4 December 1857 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Elizabeth died after 6 April 1891 when she appeared on a Scotland Census.
Robert Potts was born on 2 April 1841. He married Margaret Robertson Clint (1840-1913) on 12 June 1863 in Auchencairn Village, Rerrick Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Robert died 10 November 1907 at The Hall, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
