Charles was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, in 1895.[1] His birth was registered in the fourth quarter in Knaresborough. He was the son of Henry Potts and Lillian Elizabeth Jefferson. He was enumerated in the 1901 census [2] as a five year old residing with his mother and three siblings at 25 Grove Park West, Harrogate. In 1911, [3] he was living at 8 Newby Street, Ripon, with his mother and siblings Harold and Doris. He was fifteen and a "Plumber's Apprentice". (Note...in both the 1901 and 1911 census he mother stated she was married but father does not appear).
Charles was a Lance Corporal in the West Yorkshire Regiment, Service Number 200948, during World War I. His date of enlistment was June 29, 1915, and he saw action in France. Date of demobilization unknown. He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal, and 1915 Star for his service.[4][5]
Charles married Lily Haynes Whipp in 1936.[6] The marriage was registered in the second quarter in Keighley. The couple would have one child.
Charles passed away in 1940.[7] His death was registered in the second quarter in Keighley. He was forty five.
