Biography

Joab was a preacher. He and his wife had fourteen children. He came to Oregon in 1852. He is buried in Providence Cemetery, Scio, Linn County, Oregon.

Joab Powell and Jane (Powell) Beeler were siblings. Their spouses, John Beeler and Anna (Beeler) Powell were also brother and sister.

Joab was illiterate but became a Baptist Pastor. He had churches first in Missouri and then later in Oregon. The songs he sang and the scripture verses he quoted were from memory. His wife would read the scriptures or songs and he would memorize them. After his wife's death, he is said to have gone to a neighbors home to ask him to look after his cattle etc.. He said he would be leaving the next day. His neighbor assumed that he was going on a preaching circuit leaving the next day. The next day he found Joab at home - dead. He had never planned to go on a preaching circuit.
