Biography

Hiram Powell was a Georgian.

Hiram Powell was born June 6, 1797 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States. He was the son of John Powell and Esther Owens Powell.[1]

He married Penniah Barnes about 1818. The couple had the following known children:

  • James William Powell, 1821-1874
  • Alexander Washington Powell, about 1821-
  • Hiram H. Powell, 1827-
  • Mary Ellen Powell, 1828-
  • Jesse Rigdon Powell, 1830
  • Martha A. P. Powell, 1831-1924
  • Robert Andrew Jackson Powell, 1833-1930
  • Sarah Elizabeth Powell, 1835-
  • Benjamin Leland Powell, 1837-

Hiram was a slave owner according to the 1830 (2), 1840 (6), 1850 (?), and1860 (12) census, and in 1861 (11) named slaves in his will and probate records

The 1830 census records Hiram residing in Edwards, Talbot County, Georgia. Eight people were free and white, and two people were slaves.[2]

In the 1840 census, Hiram in residing in Talbot County, Georgia. His household consists of seventeen people; eleven are free whites and six are slaves.[3]

On March 12, 1840, his wife passed away.

On January 10, 1841, Hiram Powell married Rebecca Howard Cheaves in Crawford County, Georgia.[4] [5] The couple had the following known children:

  • Adolphus Henry Powell, 1846-1916
  • Joseph Powell, 1848-

  • Henrietta J. Powell, 1856-1937

The 1850 census records Hiram, his second wife and nine children, living in Division 20, of Crawford County, Georgia. He is a planter of agriculture. His real estate is valued at $2,500.[6]

In 1860 the census records Hiram, 63, residing in Octavia, District 26, Early, Georgia with his wife and eight children. He is employed as a Preacher. He has real estate valued at $7,000 and personal estate valued at $10,000.[7] The Slave Schedule of 1860 enumerates twelve slaves.[8]

He passed away in 1861. [9] His will and probate was recorded Early County, Georgia on August 2, 1861. The document lists his wife and children, and eleven named slaves.
