Needs Identity Statement: See Disputed Identity. This person needs a clearly stated identity tied to a reliable source to establish the foundation upon which further research may be done.
Needs Research: Unlikely that he had a middle name, and it appears maybe two people have been conflated?
Needs Biography: This profile needs a single, clear, narrative biography. Lots of material in the Research Notes, but it needs to be organized into a biography which complies with the US Southern Colonies Project Editing Guidance

> update: spelling does not stop the need for a merge
His correct name is William Thomas Powell. Some researchers have him as William Powell while other have him as Thomas Powell. But they are the same man who married Elizabeth Gorsuch
name Gorusch does not have any sources for this name. This is what started this mess in the first place.
William Powell migrated from England to Virginia.
William Powell was born on 01 April 1599 in Suffolk, England. He had several children with Elizabeth Gorsuch. [1] He may have had more than one wife as well.
He died at 87 years on 09 Feb 1687 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. [2]
Death & Legacy
Note: The "Virginia, Land, Marriage, and Probate Records entry for William Powell with a Prove date of 9 February 1687 is for William Powell as an heir to Thomas Powell.[2] Legal heirs were Thomas, Nathaniel, William and John. Mentioned were son William; daughter-in-law Lucretia Corbett; Lucretia, John, Roberta and Elizabeth Powell. Son William was the executor. The image of the probate wasn't attached to this index. The names and spouses of attached family members will need to be examined to figure out exactly whose will this was as the generations repeated first names.
Research Notes
Notes copied from son Thomas William Powell Some researchers have him as William instead of Thomas. His first name is Thomas, his middle is William. His father also has these issues among researchers with public data, but his father's name is William Thomas. That's William for the first name, Thomas for the second. William Thomas has a son named William Thomas, but that is not the same person as Thomas William; William Thomas Jr and Thomas William are brothers.

Middle Name use was rare during this era in the colonies.
Middle names among English-speakers were essentially nonexistent until the mid-1600s, remained quite rare for another century or so, and did not become common until well after the American Revolution.[3]
Middle names began appearing in late Medieval times. In England, they were reserved for the nobility, with an old law making them illegal for the rest of the population. Since the Pilgrims and many early settlers came from England, early Americans followed the tradition of having only two names.[4]
From the "Order of Ancient Planters" (Note: This appears to belong to an earlier Powell as this person would have been 10 years old when arriving and he couldn't have been the primary passenger. The name on the record is for a John Powell.)
John Powell was listed as a living inhabitant at Elizabeth Sadie in the Jamestown Bay area.
On page 246 John Powell is stated to have arrived in Jamestown aboard the ship swallow Virginia aboard the ship SWALLOWE in 1609.
On page 273 John has been granted 150 acres planted in the corporation of Elizabeth Cittie.
The date of the census listing all of the living in Virginia was dated February 16, 1623. Page 169. (So John must have died sometime after that date.)

He's listed as dyeing in Suffolk England, but in the Bio, it says he died in the Isle of Wight, Virginia and he's flagged as a US Southern Colonist. Plus, both his parents had migrated. These needs corrected.
Yes, this profile has been flagged as needing more careful research and a coherent biography. If you are interested in taking a crack at this, that would be very helpful!
Hi! I'm switching project management to the re-launched US Southern Colonies Project from the Virginia Project, which picked it up while US Southern Colonies was dormant. Thanks for looking after him!
I can't find any place in England named 'Powelltor', it does seem to be completely fictitious. There is also a William Powell who was christened in London 23 Apr 1605 at Saint Botolph's church, what are the chances of that! Also very unusual to have a middle name in that time period. According to the profile he had children in Virginia but died in Suffolk. I would suggest changing to born possibly England until a source can be found. There also doesn't seem to be any source for a marriage to Elizabeth Gorsuch or any birth records or in fact anything to suggest her surname was Gorsuch. This profile could do with some attention.
Hi Cecil and Robin, I notice that the merge of this profile with William Thomas Powell has been reproposed. To assist in the clarification and decision-making about whether these profiles are duplicates which need to be merged, or represent different people, please could you add any additional sources that you have to this profile. Also if you consider that Powell-260 represents a different person and the merge should be rejected, please add the sources that you have indicating that Powell-260 is a different individual to the research notes under this profile. Thanks so much. Gillian.
Hi Mary Helen and Kath, there is currently a merge proposal for this profile with William Thomas Powell. This merge has been proposed previously on a number of occasions, so it would be great to resolve if the two profiles are duplicates and should be merged, or are, in fact, different people. Currently there is very little on the profile in the way of sources, apart from a baptism which may, or may not, be relevant. Please could you add the sources that you have to facilitate the decision-making about the merge proposal. Many thanks, Gillian
Powell-9711 and Powell-260 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate, previously set as rejected match. Please review dates and merge. Thank you!
Did you want to ask the Southern Colonies project if they want to be added to this profile? If not, you can change that Project box to a sticker. Let me know if you need help either way.
Powell-9711 and Powell-260 do not represent the same person because: Melton-1307 WT connections show Powell-9711 as my........... Great Grandfather and Powell-260 as my ................ Great Granduncle. There is a lot of problems when children have same and similar names. Errors are easily made.
Powell-9711 and Powell-260 appear to represent the same person because: Wikitree policy is that all individuals should only have one profile so these duplicate profiles need to be merged. Please read the updated notes sections. He has the SAME wife and SAME son and SAME grandson that ALSO need to be merged also and are just waiting for this merge to be done. If you are unable to to do the merge, just approve it and I will do the merge myself. Thanks.
Powell-9711 and Powell-260 appear to represent the same person because: Powell-9711 into Powell-260
dups with same spouse and same son
Powell-260 says Thomas arrived in Maryland in 1659. But he is attached to a father who has sources showing that John arrived in VA 50 years earlier.
Therefore Thomas cannot be the son of John and so Thomas should be detached from those parents. And then the merge for dup Thomas can go through. Thanks

That is not sufficient recent to reject the match.
If you need to do more research, you can set the profiles as an unmerged match. Please do not set as a rejected match unless these are actually two separate people.
If these *are* two separate people, please add disambiguation info to their bios to explain how they have the same DOB, DOD, county of birth, exact place of death, and spouse! Thank you.
