He died at 87 years on 09 Feb 1687 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. [2]

  • Note: The "Virginia, Land, Marriage, and Probate Records entry for William Powell with a Prove date of 9 February 1687 is for William Powell as an heir to Thomas Powell.[2] Legal heirs were Thomas, Nathaniel, William and John. Mentioned were son William; daughter-in-law Lucretia Corbett; Lucretia, John, Roberta and Elizabeth Powell. Son William was the executor. The image of the probate wasn't attached to this index. The names and spouses of attached family members will need to be examined to figure out exactly whose will this was as the generations repeated first names.

  • Middle Name use was rare during this era in the colonies.
    • Middle names among English-speakers were essentially nonexistent until the mid-1600s, remained quite rare for another century or so, and did not become common until well after the American Revolution.[3]
    • Middle names began appearing in late Medieval times. In England, they were reserved for the nobility, with an old law making them illegal for the rest of the population. Since the Pilgrims and many early settlers came from England, early Americans followed the tradition of having only two names.[4]
  • From the "Order of Ancient Planters" (Note: This appears to belong to an earlier Powell as this person would have been 10 years old when arriving and he couldn't have been the primary passenger. The name on the record is for a John Powell.)

    • On page 246 John Powell is stated to have arrived in Jamestown aboard the ship swallow Virginia aboard the ship SWALLOWE in 1609.

    • The date of the census listing all of the living in Virginia was dated February 16, 1623. Page 169. (So John must have died sometime after that date.)

He's listed as dyeing in Suffolk England, but in the Bio, it says he died in the Isle of Wight, Virginia and he's flagged as a US Southern Colonist. Plus, both his parents had migrated. These needs corrected.

I can't find any place in England named 'Powelltor', it does seem to be completely fictitious. There is also a William Powell who was christened in London 23 Apr 1605 at Saint Botolph's church, what are the chances of that! Also very unusual to have a middle name in that time period. According to the profile he had children in Virginia but died in Suffolk. I would suggest changing to born possibly England until a source can be found. There also doesn't seem to be any source for a marriage to Elizabeth Gorsuch or any birth records or in fact anything to suggest her surname was Gorsuch. This profile could do with some attention.

Powell-9711 and Powell-260 do not represent the same person because: Melton-1307 WT connections show Powell-9711 as my........... Great Grandfather and Powell-260 as my ................ Great Granduncle. There is a lot of problems when children have same and similar names. Errors are easily made.

Powell-9711 and Powell-260 appear to represent the same person because: Wikitree policy is that all individuals should only have one profile so these duplicate profiles need to be merged. Please read the updated notes sections. He has the SAME wife and SAME son and SAME grandson that ALSO need to be merged also and are just waiting for this merge to be done.
