Alice Powell was the daughter of William Powell, Captain of the fort at Jamestown, Virginia.
Jackson County, West Virginia, (Virginia at the time) was created on 1 Mar 1831, from portions of Kanawha County, Mason County and Wood County, Virginia.
Alice had a brother, named George, who owned property on Chippokee Creek. When George died, he left a daughter named Mary(e) and Thomas Warren became her guardian. Alice has been thought to have been the first wife of Thomas Warren,[1] but this profile was detached from his on 3 June 2021 (see this comment on his profile). Their marriage was said to have been in Surry County, Virginia from "after 1644 (to about 1650)".
Guardianship of "Marye Powell" is established in a record entry in Surry county, February 5, 1652. It is most probable that the Court was guided by a family connection, in that Thomas Warren's wife was Mary's paternal aunt. Thomas was 28 years of age. It is also significant that Thomas named his first daughter Alice, born 1645, and that his first son, born 1648, was named William, presumably after Alice's father. [2]

The current argument for her to be his wife is as follows, and it is pure conjecture:
"Guardianship of "Marye Powell" is established in a record entry in Surry county, February 5, 1652. It is most probable that the Court was guided by a family connection, in that Thomas Warren's wife was Mary's paternal aunt. Thomas was 28 years of age. It is also significant that Thomas named his first daughter Alice, born 1645, and that his first son, born 1648, was named William, presumably after Alice's father."
This argument was presented in the older version of the "Gookin Book" referenced above and available online. However in a later edition that is not available online, this argument was discarded after the author Richard Gookins corresponded with John Frederick Dorman. Dorman presented a compelling argument that Thomas Warren was appointed guardian for other reasons and was never married to Alice Powell. It was also stated if he had then why was his daughter Alice Warren never mentioned in the disposition of the Powell estate?
A couple of other possibilities for Warren's first wife are mentioned, but in this more recent edition of the "Gookin Book", the name of his first wife is left as undetermined. Unless somebody has stronger evidence, then Alice Powell should be removed as a wife of Thomas Warren and mother of William and Alice.
I can post a photo of this more recent argument if y'all want, but it is too long to type out the whole thing.
