Biography

Dr Stephen Cambreleng Powell was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1843. He was the son of William John Powell (d. 1848), a surgeon in the United States Navy. The younger Powell attended Yale School of Medicine between 1861 and 1863, during which time he was an assistant at a local hospital for wounded soldiers. He then transferred to Columbia University and seems to have received M.D. degrees from both institutions in 1864. For three decades following graduation, Powell travelled extensively. When he settled in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1895, he began to practice medicine, specializing in diseases of the ears, nose, and throat. He continued this occupation until 1925. He was married to Henrietta King on June 15, 1871, and had no children.
