Charles Powell served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Charles Powell was born May 26, 1740, in Overwharton Parish, Stafford, Virginia. He is the son of Charles Powell and Elizabeth Perkins.[1]
Charles married Sarah Gholson[2] about 1765, probably in Spotsylvania County in Virginia, where Sarah inherited land from her grandfather, William Sandridge.
He fought in the Revolutionary War as a member of the Halifax County, Virginia militia.[3]
After the war they moved to Halifax County, Virginia. In 1807 "unhappy differences" existed between Charles and Sarah so he made a settlement with her, as she had land and money when they married.[4]
Charles Powell died between March and July in 1810.[5][6]
Research Notes
DAR indicates Charles was born 1740 in Orange County, Virginia.[7] This does not agree with the birth record from VBC.
The birth information given above comes from VBC where Charles' surname is spelled with only one "l". Comparison to the birth record for Elizabeth Powell, it seems likely that the single "l" is Charles' record was a transcription error.
It is not clear that the Charles from the VBC record is the same as the Charles from the DAR, but the two records are comingled here assuming the two are the same.
DAR records indicate descendants of three children; Charles, Louis and Lewesy (F = "Lucy"?).
