Biography

Ira B. Powell, son of Andrew J. and Nancy Ann (Boltenhouse) Powell, was born in 1850 in Indiana. He was the brother of Martha J., Walter C,, Henry B., and Emma and half-brother of William, Freeman, John, and Elizabeth. Ira was a farmer in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He married Mary Catharine McClure, daughter of John B. and Mariah (Swank) McClure, about 1870, and their first child, John Edward, was born the next year. He was also the father of Acy, Noah, Freeman Nathan. In 1880, Catharine's younger sister, Emily McClure, was also living with the family. Catharine died in 1882, soon after the birth of their youngest child, David Claude, who also died in 1882.

In 1883, Ira married Laura Hoffer in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. In 1886, he married Clarissa I. Webb. Their daughter, Ethel, was born in 1888. The 1900 US Census reports Ira and Clarissa living in Delphi, Indiana, with children Ethel, Floyd, Glenn, and Ruth. Clarissa's older sister, Martha Webb, was also living with them. By 1910, Ira and Clarissa were farming again in Tippecanoe County, and their family included one last son, Clarence. Ira died in 1927.
