Freeman, son of Andrew and Cynthia (Patt) Powell, was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in 1838. He was the brother of William, John, and Elizabeth. Half-brother of Martha J., Ira B., Walter C,, Henry B., and Emma. His first wife was Elizabeth Burkhalter, who he married in 1860. In 1866, he married Sophronia Sellers. He was the father of Marshall and Lyman. In 1870, Freeman and his family were living together with his brother, John and his wife Rebecca. Freeman was farming, and John was a brick maker.
