Acy, son of Ira B. and Mary Catharine (McClure) Powell, was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in 1873. He was the brother of John Edward, Noah, Freeman Nathan, and David Claude Powell. His mother died when he was 9 years old, and his father remarried. His half-siblings were Ethel, Floyd, Glenn, Ruth, and Clarence.
Acy's father was a farmer, and Acy followed in his footsteps. He married Amanda J. Moss, daughter of Lewis and Nancy (Unger) Moss, in Carroll County, Indiana, in 1899, and they began farming near Burlington in Carroll County. Acy and Amanda were the parents of Alfred R., Mary G., Dale Moss., and Raymond H. In 1940, his granddaughter, Betty J. Powell, was also living with the family. Acy died in 1945 and is buried in Flora, Indiana.
