John Powell was a North Carolina colonist.

John Powell served with 1776 Project Needs Additional Sources during the American Revolution.
This profile is part of the Powell Name Study.

HIS PARENTS ARE UNCONFIRMED. We also need to sort out the two sons named Elias. Did he really have two sons named Elias born 20 years apart?

yDNA results from a known descendant of this John Powell are in the R-M269 haplogroup, different from the haplogroup of the known descendants of John Powell & Ann Pickett of Culpeper, VA, who are in haplogroup T-M70.

It is most likely that this John Powell was born in Virginia as per the research notes of Allan L. Poe, who wrote that after 1734, the names of Ambrose (born 1713), Benjamin, Elias and John Powell appear in the records of Culpeper County, VA. (Culpeper County was established in 1749, being originally part of Spotsylvania County, formed in 1721, which was divided into what are now Orange (1734), Culpeper (1749), Madison (1792), and Rappahannock (1833) Counties.[1])

Poe adds that in 1755, Elias and John Powell appear on the tax lists of Orange County, NC. He said that the sons of Elias were likely Ambrose, Thomas, Elijah and Lewis Powell - all of whom migrated westward. Lastly, he wrote that the wife of John Powell was Mary O'Neal and they were the ancestors of the "present" day Powells of Caldwell County, North Carolina.[2]

The Powells resided on the Middle Fork of Lower Creek in Burke County, North Carolina. John's will was probated 21 Jan 1783 in Burke County, North Carolina.

Researcher Emmet Lucas wrote that his source, the records of a Dr. Casey, stated that John had a first wife named Judith who he married in Caroline County. He also said that John married Mary O'Neal in Culpeper about 1754. [3] If that date is correct, then all of the children before Ambrose would have been those of Judith Powell.

Lucas also gives record of a bond signed in Burke County, North Carolina, dated 21 Jan 1786, citing Mary Powell as administratrix on the estate of John Powell, deceased. The bond was also signed by James Powell and James Blair.[4]

The known children of John & Mary were:

  1. Anna, b: 1730 Culpeper, Virginia
  2. Elias, b: 1734 Culpeper, Virginia[5]
  3. John, b: 1739 Culpeper, Virginia
  4. Joseph, b: abt 1741
  5. Robert, b: abt 1743
  6. Ambrose, b: 1754 Burke County, North Carolina

The sons of John Powell and Mary O'Neal Powell as given in "Caldwell County, NC, Families" by Linda Staley and Allan Poe were:[6]

  1. John Powell Jr.
  2. Ambrose Powell
  3. Elias Powell
  4. Robert Powell
  5. Benjamin Powell
  6. Elijah Powell
  7. James Powell
  8. Thomas Powell

Notes from Ellisue Barber Morris: John and Mary O'Neal Powell lived in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1750. In 1755 they migrated to Orange County, North Carolina with many friends and relatives including O'Neals, Albrights, Holts, Allens, Murrays, Griders, and many others. In addition to Anna, they had at least three sons: William, Robert, and Elias Powell, Jr., who was named for his father's brother and was named "junior" to distinguish between uncle and nephew.[7]

There are multiple online references to the marriage of John Powell & Mary O'Neal in Culpeper, Virginia in 1729. There is no verifiable source for this marriage. Would someone who has access to the book by Ellisue Barber Morris see if this marriage record came from her research and what was her source? There are lots of copies all over Texas, one in L.A., one in D.C., one in N.Y. Maybe we could just get photos of pages 201-204?

On the 1790 US Census, there were seven heads of household in Burke County with the surname "Powell" as follows:

p. 99
  1. Thomas (1,1,2)[8]
  2. Ambrose (2,4,5,1)[9]
  3. Elias (1,3,3,1)[10]
p. 101
  1. Thomas (1,1,4)[11]
  2. Elijas (1,0,1,2)[12]
  3. Elias, Sr. (1,0,0,1)[13]
  4. Lewis (1,0,1)[14]

Research Notes

It is possible that he was the son of John and Elizabeth Powell of Anne Arundel, Maryland, born on 25 Sept 1707.[15] There are, however, three John Powells with records from Anne Arundel County in Family Search's "Maryland Births and Christenings" as follows:

son of John & Elizabeth Powell, born 29 Sept 1694
son of John & Elizabeth Powell, born 25 Sept 1707
son of John & Mary Powell, born 31 Mar 1712

It is possible that he served as a drummer during the American Revolution.[16] This seems unlikely since drummer boys were usually "boys". Any of the possible "John Powells" would have been over 60 years old at the time of the war and his son, Elias Powell, is well known for having served in the Revolution. It is unlikely that his father would have been a "boy" at the time his son was a "young man" enlisted in the military.

Dorcas Powel from Maryland Births and Christenings: Name-Dorcas Powel, Gender-Female, Birth Date-29 Jul 1724, Birthplace-All Hollows Parish, Anne Arundel, MD, Father's Name-John Powel, Mother's Name-Mary

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

A birth date (Powell-111 born 31 Mar 1712) is more than 40 years before or after a sibling's birth date (Powell-116 born 1669) .

As per the bio, this profile is rife with "maybes", so no surprise to have this error. I think it might be good to post this comment on his father's page.

Someone asked about sources in "They Came to Cass Co., Texas…" I have the pages 200-204 from the book. I don't see any sources. Let me know if anyone wants copies.

Would someone who has access to the book by Ellisue Barber Morris see if this marriage record came from her research and what was her source?

My library has the book. I’ve sent request for this information, preferably photos of aforementioned pages.

Why does this profile say it "lacks sources" when there are multiple sources?
posted by E. McCraw
I believe there is a need for Birth, Marriage and Death cited sources. Multiple family trees without citations, lots of guesstimates on dates, To many unanswered questions

A mother's death date (Coghill-1 died 1698) should not be before one of her children's birth dates (Powell-111 born 31 Mar 1712) .

Is the following correct? A birth date (Powell-111 born 31 Mar 1712) is more than 40 years before or after a sibling's birth date (Powell-116 born 1669) .

posted by Loretta (Leger) Corbin
I think all of the birthdates are guesstimates, plus the mother is uncertain.

Powell-9387 and Powell-111 appear to represent the same person because: Both born in Virginia, both married Mary O'Neal, both have son named Ambrose (see source for Powell-111) Powell-111 named his son John lll, and both died in same location. 9387 is not sourced
Powell-10628 and Powell-111 appear to represent the same person because: The sources that match are the same place of birth, same spouse, "Anna" listed as child, and same place of death.
