See stone for Lt John Peyton Powell for correct death date. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/28674566/john-peyton-powell

Note: Date of death for this individual is listed as 23 Jun 1844, based, I think, on the record from "Alabama, Marriages, Deaths, Wills, Court, and Other Records, 1784-1920" source listed above (SG031427), but also says that the obituary was printed in the Huntsville Democrat issue of 4 June 1844. Obviously this cannot be true, since the date of death would not have been known. The Huntsville Democrat for 5 June 1844 (https://www.newspapers.com/image/348708376#) says that he died on the 23rd "inst" (meaning this month). The likeliest scenario is that John P. Powell died on 23 May 1844, not June. The person writing the obituary happened to use "inst" incorrectly, and the person recording the death in the above source record did not make the correction to 23 May 1844. The Lt John Peyton Powell stone (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/28674566/john-peyton-powell) indicates his death was 23 May 1844.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

SAR marked John Peyton Powell's grave today (Eldridge Cemetery, Madison Co., AL). Several of us noticed he was in a VA CL regiment (11th VA to be precise) so when I arrived home I immediately looked at the Southern Campaigns Pension Files and the dates in his pension application and his service record basically help prove he was at Valley Forge, Dec. 1777 to June 19, 1778. A friend who is a member of the AL Brigade, DVF, looked up Powell on Fold3 and because the unit he was assigned to as an Ensign was stationed at Valley Forge and muster records show he was there, descendants are eligible to apply for membership in 'Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge' (DVF).

I encourage descendants to apply to join DVF. I'm not a member (however, working on a line right now) but can tell you that the organization is amazing. Sincerely, Linda Alcott Maples (alcott-171) James H. Maples (maples-878) 15 year member of the AL Brigade through DVF; past Commander of the AL Brigade and past DVF Historian

I think there is some confusion about the date of death for this individual. It is listed here as 23 Jun 1844, based I think on the record from "Alabama, Marriages, Deaths, Wills, Court, and Other Records, 1784-1920" source listed above (SG031427), in addition to a grave stone, pictures of both of which can be found within Ancestry.com records.

I can't dispute the images of these, but what piqued my interest was that the particular record in the above source must necessarily contain a typo. It references the day of death as 23 June 1844, but also says that the obituary was printed in the Huntsville Democrat issue of 4 June 1844. Obviously this cannot be true, since the date of death would not have been known.

I suspected that one of the two months in the record must have been misrecorded, so I was able to track down the issue of the Huntsville Democrat for 5 June 1844 (https://www.newspapers.com/image/348708376# if you log in with an Ancestry account) and sure enough, it says that he died on the 23rd "inst" (meaning this month), which only adds to the confusion because the 23rd of the month hadn't happened yet...

To me, the likeliest scenario is that John P. Powell died on May 23rd, 1844, not June. The person writing the obituary happened to use "inst" incorrectly, and which for some inexplicable reason the person recording the death in the above source record decided not to correct, but to instead record the preposterous statement that, essentially, he died on the 23rd of June and the death was reported in the June 5th edition of the paper.

Backing this up is that there is another gravestone at the same site (also on findagrave @ https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/28674566/john-peyton-powell, can be verified since one is in front of the other and the moss matches up) with the date of death as 23 May 1844, which would make a lot more sense.

I know this is a lot to dump on a comment page, please let me know if there's a different way I should make a submission to this effect.

based on the pension number in text & http://revwarapps.org/s46407.pdf ... I think this John Peyton Powell is the one who married Tabitha, daughter of Benjamin Harris and his wife Ann Eppes.
