William Powell served in the United States Civil War.

Military Service

William Mustered into service on October 7 1861 along with his older brother, father and uncles at Lewisburg Conway county AR.He would have been 12-13 Years old. He was absent on Muster roll dated October 7 to November 6 1861 remarks state "Sick Furlough Conway co"

On company muster dated June 30 1862 to February 28 1863 he was present on all his Muster rolls which means he would have fought at the battles in Corinth and Pea Ridge. March 7 1863 There is a document that states the following

I certify that the within named William J. Powell a private of Captain H ? Company D of the 21st regiment of Arkansas ? Inft. born in Hardemon co. (I think it says this county) in the state of Tenn aged 16 years 5 feet 4 inches high Dark complexion Gray eyes Dark hair and by occupation Farmer was enlisted by S. W. Williams at Lewisburg Ark on the 1 day of October 1861 to serve one year and is now certified to a discharge by reason of being under age. The said W.J. Powell was last paid by TJ ? to include the 31st day of December 1862 and has pay due from that date to the present date being 2 months and 7 days at (11) Eleven dollars per month amounting to Twenty Four dollars and fifty cents. There is due him Forty dollars traveling allowance from camp Donelson Misp the place of discharge to Lewisburg Arkansas the place of enlistment, transportation not being furnished in kind. There is due him Sixty four dollars and fifty cents. He is indebted to the confederate states----------------------- dollars on account of........................................................

Given in duplicate at camp Donelson Misp this 7th day of March 1863  ??, Capt for pay from 1st of January 1863 to 7th of March 1863 being 2 months and 7 days at 11 eleven dollars per month For the traveling from Camp Donelson Misp to Lewisburg Ark being 401 miles at 10 cents per mile

For pay for........................ AMount................................. deduct for..................... balance paid..........................

Received of Y J. Martin Capt of 2 ? C.S. army this 7th day of March 1863 sixty four dollars and fifty cents in full of the above amount.
