Biography

When Owen Orin Powers was born in 1834 in Shelby, Indiana, his father, Laban, was 24 and his mother, Margaret, was 27. He married Elizabeth Jewell in 1861 in Missouri. They had nine children in 24 years. He died in 1899 in Upton, Missouri, at the age of 65. He was a farmer and a blacksmith. In July 1863 while living one mile South of Waynesville, Pulaski County, Missouri, 26 year old Orin a farmer registered for the Draft. U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865 While living in Success, Missouri. Owen was playing poker behind his Blacksmith shop with 5 other men, and came in the house with his shirt ripped off, he said someone was cheating and he had to whip all 5 of them. Owen died sometime between 1896 & 1900 when he went to the spring behind the Blacksmith shop to refill the vat he kept water in to cool off his work, while there he splashed the cold water on himself to cool off and went into shock and died the next day. ^[1]
