Biography

John Wesley was born in January 1845 in Ohio. He was the son of Lewis Powers and Sarah (Coltman) Powers. Note: though he is a year older in his obituary and the 1850 census, a yearyounger in the 1860 census and 2 years younger in the 1910 census[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Retired Fireman and War Veteran Dead
John W. Powers Passes Away Rather Suddenly Today at PennsylvaniaResort.
John W. Powers, retired fireman and Civil War veteran, died rathersuddenly at Penn Mawr, a Pennsylvania summer resort, early Wednesdaymorning, according to word that was received here this morning. Mr. andMrs. Powers, who make their home at 176 South Franklin avenue, went toWaynesburg, Pa., several weeks ago to spend the summer with theirdaughter, Mrs. Harry Crilly. When he left here he was apparently ingood health and the announcement of his death comes as a big surprise tohis many friends here.
For a long period of years Mr. Powers was connected with the MansfieldFire Department. He served as captain of the No. 3 fire station fromthe time it was added until about five years ago when he retired fromthe service. Mr. Powers was also a veteran of the Civil war and amember of the lodge of Odd Fellows.
Mr. Powers was 71 years of age, and is survived by his wife and twodaughters, Mrs. Harry Crilly, of Waynesburg, Pa., and Mrs. Bertie F.Johnston, who, with her daughter Miss Lena, is spending the summer inCalifornia.
The body will be brought to Mansfield, arriving here early Thursdaymorning. Funeral arrangements will be made following arrival of thebody.

The funeral of J. W. Powers will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clockfrom the residence on South Franklin avenue, conducted by the Rev. HenryCandler. The I. O. O. F. lodge will have charge of the services. Thepallbearers will be selected from the fire department and Odd fellows.
