Powers Family of Ontario

This entry is from "Powers family of Ontario" and tagged Leeds County, Ontario, Nathaniel Powers. Here is an account of Nathaniel’s Revolutionary War service, provide by Robert Dorsett.[1]

This is an attempt to reconstruct the activity of Nathaniel Powers (b. 1754) throughout his military career during the Revolutionary War until Nathaniel’s return to Richmond 19 July 1782. Records for the activity of New Hampshire men in the Revolutionary War are sparse and Col. Joseph Cilley, under whom the Powers brothers served for much of their service, was evidently poor at documenting his activity throughout the war. However, much of the documentation for this reconstruction was accumulated from historical websites, four volumes of ‘Rolls of soldiers during the Revolutionary war’ and various other sources. In addition, in a letter dated September 9 1929, Ivy Blanche Powers Bradford, (b. 19 May 1870) in Barrington, IL, a devoted genealogist and great-granddaughter to Nathaniel Powers, claimed that her great-grandfather “was a corporal in the American Revolution and served in the battles of Ticonderoga, Bennington, Saratoga and Yorktown.” This was published in The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy Vol III, p. 84 by Frederick A. Virkus 1928. Following this lead and assuming this is correct, I have traced the probable course of maneuvers for Nathaniel Powers and his brothers Abner, Thomas, Joseph, Whitcomb and Simeon during this eventful time in history. Throughout much of the war the brothers stayed together as shown below.

Revolutionary War Service of Nathaniel Powers Posted on July 18, 2010 by Gary

According to the Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War, 1775 to May 1777 (p. 468 and 471), he is stated to have enlisted in 1776 in a list provided by Col. Cilley, commander of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment.

Nathaniel Powers (1754-1804), born in the USA and the father of Nathaniel Hart Powers (1787-1862). The Powers family moved to Canada around 1790 and Nathaniel was to die in Leeds County Ontario in 1804. The family played a very important role in the Revolutionary War so it is unclear why they moved to Canada.

  • According to Nathaniel's Land Claim in 1794, he states that he wishes to be a loyal subject of the King and to reside in Canada.

Death

Burial: Yonge Mills Cemetery, Yonge Mills, Leeds and Grenville United Counties, Ontario, Canada.

DNA

Attempting to prove relationships using DNA

Christopher Douglas M055274 and grandfather Richard Douglas shows DNA match with descendant of Susan (Powers) Allen, William Wise on GedMatch A805722. MRCA is about 5 generations away. It turns out it is actually further because William Wise and Christopher Douglas are double related because one of William Wise ancestors, Albert Allen, married a cousin of his, who was a descendant of Jonathan Whitcomb (1669 - 1715) and Mary Blood. Both Albert Allen and his wife are related to Christopher Douglas through Cpl. Nathaniel Powers, the MRCA.

Richard Douglas is a DNA match with Charles Barclay Dorsett (1927 - 2019) on MyHeritage. They share a 7.1 Cm segment on Chromosome 1, a segment of 8.3 Cm on Chr. 2, and a segment of 9.1 Cm on Chr. 8.

Chromosome 8

Richard Douglas is a DNA match with Donna McDonald on My Heritage. They share a 24.7 Cm segment on Chromosome 8.

Richard Douglas is a DNA match with Jane McCoy on MyHeritage. They share a segment of 11.6 Cm on Chromosome 8, and a segment on Chromosome 19 of 8.8 Cm.

Richard Douglas is a DNA match with Deborah Wallace on MyHeritage. They share a segment of 20.9 Cm on Chromosome 1, and a segment on Chromosome 8 of 12.6 Cm.

Richard, Donna, and Jane overlap on Chr. 8, with segment size 10.3 Cm.

Richard, Donna, and Jane and Deborah overlap on Chr. 8, with segment size 9.1 Cm.

None of the required documentation has been included, so I’ve changed the parental relationship from ‘confirmed with DNA’ to ‘confident’.
