I was born on the birthday of a Powers' family friend named Marilyn, so that's why Marilyn is my middle name. Katherine was my maternal grandmother's name, so my first name is Catherine in her honor.
Our family was living at 4039 Orr Street, Flint, Michigan, per the 1956 Flint City Directory. [1]
My aunt and uncle (Barbara and Ray Barnum) lived in that house after we moved to Winchester Village in Swartz Creek, Michigan. [2]
I was a Swartz Creek Dragon from Kindergarten through the 8th grade. Eighth grade was held at the high school where my Dad was a guidance counselor. He spent the year I was in the 3rd grade at Michigan State University obtaining his Master's Degree for that career. He earned his teaching degree at Western Michigan University. One memorable day for me was when I accompanied my Dad to MSU where he tested me (Stanford-Binet, I believe) as part of a class project. At the end of the day we ate spaghetti ( which was sprinkled with red pepper flakes, an experience new to me. Whenever I use pepper flakes, it's a reminder of an unusual day in my childhood).
The small house in Swartz Creek was sold and an old farmhouse with much more room was rented in Davison, Michigan, from my Dad's employer, the Industrial Mutual Association (IMA) of Flint. Long after the Powers family lived there, the farmhouse was used for a practice burn by the local fire department and a golf course was built in its place.
My Powers grandparents would include me when they visited familial graves in Thornville (Lapeer County), Michigan. Afterwards we would have dinner at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant in nearby Dryden. I've visited those same graves in the Thornville Cemetery as an adult. Those visits reminded me that I had ancestors who lived in Lapeer (and thought my grandfather was born there; he wasn't -- his parents moved to Battle Creek for about a 10 year period and that's where my grandfather and many of his siblings were born).

Are you related to Amelia C McFadyen and has a relative of Amelia entered their DNA? My McFadyens are difficult to trace.
Congratulations on being Pre-1700 certified! Now it's time to pick a project that best fits the pre-1700 profiles you'll be working on.
Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Do you have some historically-significant ancestors? Look at the list of active projects to see if one fits your needs.
