James first married Eliza Jane Gibson (born Cravey). After her death he married Mary A. Powers. Powers may or not be her maiden name, but it is listed this way on some family trees. She was born 1852 in Mississippi and is listed in James' household in 1870 and 1880. They would have married between May 19, 1869, when Eliza died, to before September 23, 1870, when the 1870 Census was taken in Brazos County.
