Biography

The Powers ancestors prior to about 1800 is fairly unsettled. Our understanding has been greatly enhanced by the heroic work of Janet (Powers) Maune. The summary information here is based on her larger work. John Michael is taken to be the youngest of several sons of David and Mary Powers. John Michael's wife is known for certain as "Elizabeth". Janet (Powers) Maune concludes that she is likely Elizabeth Lozier daughter of Nicholas Lozier. She bases this conclusion on Elizabeth's election of Nicholas Lozier to execute John Michael's will despite many of his brothers being in the immediate vicinity. An Elizabeth Lozier has not been found, however, among the progeny of Nicholas Lozier (See Anna Lozier wife of George Powers, Jr. Records are well known to be incomplete. An alternative is that John Michael is the John Powers who married Elizabeth Levesque (b. 1/Feb.1792 KY; d 13/Dec/1872) in Bourbon Co. KY April 21, 1810. This John Powers (or Power was still living in Boone Co. in 1850 with Elizabeth according to the 1850 Census. A marriage date of 1810 is problematical for the birth of John "Johnnie" Powers to John Michael in 1808. The issue is sufficiently unresolved that the maiden name of Elizabeth is left unstated here.
