John Joseph was the son of John Powers, born about 1823, and Alice Moon, born about 1827. According to the 1870 Census, both his parents were born in Ireland. At that time his father John was running an eating house, most probably patronised by fellow Irish immigrants. He married Eliza Guyer as her second husband. In the 1900 Census he is recorded as being employed as a stevedore. At that time he and Eliza had three daughters, Elise, born May 1894; Alice, born Oct 1896 and Florence, born Jan 1898. All three daughters were born in New York. Also living with them were three of Eliza's children from her first marriage.
