Matachanna was one of four known daughters of Wahunseneca Chief Powhatan.[1]

A previous version of this profile claimed she was daughter of Powhatan through his favorite wife, Winganuske, but Matachanna was already an adult and married when Winganuske became a wife of Powhatan. The chief had a practice of returning a wife to her family once she had born him a child. The name of Matachanna's mother is not known.

She was married to the priest Uttamatomakkin by 1616, when he accompanied Pocahontas to England. It is not known whether Mattachanna was one of the women in the party, although it is likely.[2]

Research Notes

Thomas West and Totopotomoi

FindAGrave,[3] some trees on the web, and an unsourced pedigree in a 2014 book called Shawnee Heritage IV[4] suggest that Matachanna entered into a relationship with Thomas West and that they were parents of Totopotomoi (Pamunkey) Powhatan. There is no good evidence to support these claims. See Totopotomoi's profile for more information.

Matachanna was the wife of Uttomatomakin before he went to England with Pocahontas. She wasn't married to a white man, they had no recorded children.

Of the Powhatan tribe-1 and Powhatan-176 appear to represent the same person because: Only one known daughter of Powhatan named Matachanna. Had no LNAB so tribe name should be used.

There is, I am afraid, no good evidence that Matachana came to England with Pocahontas or had a relationship with Thomas West, 3rd Lord de la Warr. Nor is there any good evidence that she and Thomas West 3rd Lord de la Warr were parents of Totopotomoi. See the profile of Totopomoi managed by the Native Americans Project, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pamunkey-1 for more information on what is known - nothing really - about Totopotomoi's parents. I propose to detach Matachana from Thomas West 3rd Lord de la Warr.

She needs to be detached from both Thomases and this profile merged with the correct one.

I have detached her. I will leave others to complete the merge and do any tidying up after.

Winganuske is not the mother of Mattachanna. Mattachanna was born in the 1590's. Winganuske was the favorite wife of Powhatan in 1610, twenty years later. Powhatan's practice was to return each wife to her family as soon as a child was born.

Powhatan-277 and Powhatan-176 appear to represent the same person because: this is a duplicate profile. I see you are using the Shawnee Heritage books as a source. Please be advised that these books are full of inaccuracies and flat are considered by many to be flat out fraudulent. They are not considered a reliable source.
