Biography

William Strachey wrote of Parahunt in his "Historie"

Parahunt, one of Powhatan's sonnes, whome we therefore call Tanxpowatan, which is as much to say Little Powhatan, and is weroance of the country which hath his owne name, called Powhatan, lying (as before mencioned) close under the Falls, bordering the Monacans, and he maye at the present be furnished with fifty fighting and ready men. [1]

In 1609, following a conflict in which half of Parahunt's 120 warriors were killed, an English teenager named Henry Spelman was sent to live with Parahunt. Spelman stayed with Parahunt only a few weeks. Spelman later wrote his own history of Virginia, and his account can be found transcribed at Virtual Jamestown. [2]

The "Encyclopedia Virginia" describes Parahunt as Powhatan's brother, not his son. [3]

Further research found this: "... Captain John Smith mistook Parahunt for "the greate kyng Powhatah." Without correcting them, Wahunsonacock's son informed his guests.... " so it appears that Parahunt was definitely Powhatan's son, not his brother.
