Biography

Tatahcoope is one of only 8 documented children of Powhatan, although he had many more. His mother was Oholasc. His date of birth and death are unknown, but he was probably born between 1590 and 1595. Powhatan named Tatahcoope as weroance of Quiyoughcohannock, but since he was too young to lead, Powhatan named his mother the Weroansqua until Tatahcoope came of age. [1] William Strachey, who recorded these events, only lived in the Virginia colony in 1610 and 1611. He wrote further of Tatahcoope, saying, "the aforesaid Tatacope, made weroance, who, being yet young (as is said) is mostly in the government of Chopoke, at Chowopo… " [2]

There is no other information known about him; while-- if he reached adulthood-- he likely had a mate and had offspring, their names are lost to history.

There is no proof that he had a son Madockawando Powhatan Sachem or a mate named Ottopomtacks Abenaquis.

Theresa, we believe it is possible to respect cultural differences and work together on genealogy no matter our ancestry or heritage. Wikitree does not require that people working on profiles or specific projects be direct line descendants of the given profile. Wikitree is a site committed to accuracy and sourcing. Please cite your sources. See the honor code under the Help menu.

The only known descent to recent generations from Powhatan is through his daughter Amonute, more popularly known as Pocahontas. See https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Powhatan-Descendants-3

The only title (or position) held by Tatahcoope was “weroance” which translates to “commander” or “chief” of a village. In the tribes of the Powhatan Confederacy this position was usually inherited through matrilineal descent, but Powhatan frequently ignored this and replaced hereditary chiefs with his sons as he did with Tatahcoope.

We also know that he was not old enough to be a weroance in 1610/1611, the period when Strachey was in Virginia. HIs mother was given the position until he was old enough to rule on his own, so his birth year is likely between 1590-1595.

Thank you; the NA project will then detach the recently added son.

All that we know about this man are his name and the names of his parents. They are mentioned in Strachey. "Oholasc…. whose sonne…..His name is Tatahcoope" is the sum total of the information we have on him.

Kathie, it's my understanding that there is no documented evidence of his offspring; is that right?

Tatacope has acquired an unrelated person, a Penobscot Indian from Maine, as a son.
