DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joshua by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joshua:
Poythress-101 and Poythress-42 appear to represent the same person because: Poythress-42 was created with similar birth date and almost same death date to that of Poythress-101. Then was converted into an entirely different unknown person, and then no further development occurred. Reverted identity to original identity. Bio, sources, and datafields of Poythress-101 should be preserved in the merge.
The profile Unknown Poythress (abt.1850-) was originally for Joshua Poythress, born about 1699 and died about 1740, and set as the father of Mary (Poythress) Epes (abt.1737-1792). The profile was anonymized and then much later an unsupported "about 1850" birth year was added.
The profiles for Poythress-42 and Poythress-41 have been disconnected because there is no evidence of the parent/child relationship.
Should Poythress-42 and Poythress-101 be merged since they originally had all the same info other than the relationship?
This profile contains no information and has no connections. I propose to merge it to Polythress-189 which has the same birthdate and same surname. Please let me know if you have any objections or additional information for this profile. Thank you.

Warning: Check the data.
A father's death date (Poythress-101 died 8 Apr 1740) should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates (Poythress-146 born 1753) .
Thanks for noticing this, Liz. I also see that there are no sources for either the father's death, the son's birth or even for the relationship between them. So much work remains to be done on this family.
Yeah - my family notes on this line don't reach this level for any source guidance. What do you recommend as a path? I do not have access to Ancestry, Family Search, etc. for document retrieval - I would send letters to archivists, etc. (old school). Should I just abandon the profiles for someone else, or wait until I have more collaborators? Advice please.

Sure - Ann Poythress married a John Wall (senior) but we need to sort through which one... There are presently 3 different profiles listed as her spouse. I adopted some of these profiles as the logical extension of confirmed family trees. I have not edited the profiles I adopted yet since they require additional research on my part.

If born around 1689, Joshua is probably the son of John's second wife, not his first (Christon, bp 1634). See information and sources on this page on my speculation as to John's second wife.
R. Bolling Batte's research has Joshua as the first child (and John b c1665 as 6th). John (b c1665, m Mary Batte), was the son Christon (bp 1634). See RBB online chart and narrative. The narrative shows Joshua's son Joshua as husband of Mary Short (see info on first page of this JSTOR article).
