It is not clear whether James was born "Prater" or "Prather." His descendants are apparently all named "Prater."
James Prater was born about 1785 in Virginia.[1]
James served in the War of 1812. He received bounty land for his service, and later his widow received a pension. The pension and bounty land warrant files contain information rregarding his age, marriage, military service and death. Veteran War 1812, enrolled September 1813 Pvt 4th VA Militia, Capt. James Michels Co.

He married Phebe Griffith on Jnuary 14, 1913 in Tazewell County, Virginia.[2] Their children were:
James and his family resided in Tazewell Co., Va until 1845, when they sold their land on the Clinch River and moved to Morgan Co., Ky.
A series of deeds recorded in Deed Book H on pages 116,325,326, and 411-416 identifies the heirs and their places of residence in 1856.

On the 1820 Tazewell Co., VA. census there is a household headed by Elizabeth Prater, James mother, and James is also listed living in Tazewell Co. on the same census with his family, then on the 1830 census there is a lady age 70 living in his household, it is believed that this was his mother.
James is thought to be the only surviving son of Jonathan and Elizabeth. This info. taken from the records of Magoffin Co. KY. Gene. Soc. He was in Military service in Sept. 1813 in the 4th Va. Militia, term of 6 mo. War of 1812, Pvt. 4th VA. Militia / Sept., 1813 Capt. James Michels Co., #13
