James Prather was born 27 Jan 1737 in Queen Annes Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland, to Thomas Sprigg Prather and Elizabeth Clagett. He had 16 brothers and sisters. He married Sarah Beatty, of Irish and Scots descent, and the couple had at least one child, Sarah Prather who married Joseph Foster. He died on 10 Feb 1816 in Allegany, Maryland.

Research Notes
James Prather fought in the French and Indian War, was captured by the Indians but was found and ransomed by his father. He became a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. He married his first wife (name unknown) with whom he had four children, then married Sarah who survived him. He was a member of the Maryland Legislature from Western Maryland. His descendants are found mainly in Illinois and Iowa.
