Will

Note NI173The Will of William B. Prather: Dated 26 June, 1832 and probated Sept., 1832
"all of estate for her natural life or widowhood and if she should marry, she shall receive only one-third. She may sell Negroes at her pleasure. He leaves to his grandchildren, Elen and Benedict Duley, as heirs of his daughter, Nancy Owen Duley, deceased, all of their mother's portion.
This Will was winessed by Washington Adamson, William W. Beckwith (one time owner of Horner's Mill), Edward Creycraft, and Singleton Prather.
Horner's Mill
</b>At one point in the family history, the Prathers had an influence on the Horner's Mill.
We believe the same mill was called Prather's Mill for a short period of time.
1765 Mr. Dent owned the land on which Horner's Mill is located. It was sold to William Prather Williams who owned the Rockville land at the time when Rockville was referred to as Williamsburg.
1780 Mill owned by John Lodge. At this time the mill was referred to as Lodge's Mill.
1786 Eliza and Ed Williams owns the mill. From sometime after 1786 to 1799 the mill is owned by Charles Beckwith.
1799 Mill owned by Charles Beckwith.
1804 Suit filed over Lodge's Mill due to previous owners holding debts. The suit took 15 years and was decided in the favor of John Lodge.
1831 Mr. Landsdale owned the mill from Jan. 1 until Dec., at which time it went to public auction.
1833 The mill is purchased by Benjamin Forrest and left to his wife, Anna Forrest.
1846 Anna Forest sells the mill to Singleton Prather. Deeds show that the Prather home , still owned by Singleton's mother, Elizabeth O. is valued at ,500 The Mill owned by Singleton Prather, is valued at ,500.
Sometime after this date Singleton sells the mill to his son-in-law,Florida's husband, Charles Higgins.
1877 Charles Higgins sells the mill to the Horners. With this goes 166 acres of land which is divided into four parts among four Horners.
1879 The Rockville Directory which lists names and occupations, registeres John W. and Frank B. Horner as farmers.
1880 Frank B. Horner is listed as Miller and does not live with John. In the 1880 census, the entire Horner family is living with the mother, presumably at the Horner estate. Frank lives by himself.......probably at or near the mill.
Early 1900's There is a request for a road to be built connecting Horner's Lane to Avery Road. Today this road is Southlawn.
(premise: It could be that the original Horner owners wished to connect the mill to the estate with this road).
